What is OCD?

Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD) is a mental health condition defined by a cycle of intrusive obsessions and compulsive responses. Obsessions are unwanted, repetitive thoughts, images, or urges that produce intense anxiety or distress. Here's the part that makes OCD so relentless: the compulsion provides temporary relief, which reinforces the cycle and makes it harder to break over time.

OCD presents in many different forms. Some of the most common types we treat include:
Contamination OCD: persistent fear of germs, illness, or being "dirty"
Harm OCD: intrusive thoughts about hurting yourself or someone you love
Checking OCD: repeated checking behaviors driven by "what if" fears
Relationship OCD: obsessive doubt and rumination about your relationships
Scrupulosity OCD: excessive guilt and moral or religious obsessions
• "Just Right" OCD: a sense that something is off until a compulsion is performed
Existential OCD: consuming rumination about meaning, reality, or identity

How We
Treat OCD

What many people don't fully recognize is how often OCD and trauma are intertwined. This is where Snyder Therapy's approach is different. Rather than treating only the surface-level symptoms of OCD, we look at the whole picture including any underlying trauma that may be feeding the cycle.

Our trauma-informed perspective means you'll never be pushed faster than your nervous system can handle and your experiences will always be met with compassion.

Exposure and Response Prevention (ERP)

Exposure therapy for OCD is widely recognized as the gold-standard treatment for OCD. ERP works by gradually and safely exposing you to the thoughts, situations, or sensations that trigger your obsessions, while supporting you in resisting the compulsive response. Over time, this process teaches your nervous system that uncertainty is tolerable, that feared outcomes rarely materialize, and that you can function without the compulsion.

EMDR for OCD

Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) is most widely known for trauma treatment, but OCD EMDR therapy is an emerging and promising approach. Especially when trauma or painful memories are driving obsessive patterns. EMDR works by helping the brain reprocess distressing experiences so they lose their emotional charge. Our trained EMDR therapists have extensive experience applying this modality to complex presentations.

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT)

CBT helps you identify the thought patterns and beliefs that fuel your OCD cycle. This includes inflated responsibility, intolerance of uncertainty, or the belief that thoughts equal actions. By examining and reshaping these patterns, CBT gives you a toolkit you can rely on long after therapy ends.
