You Know It's Only a Sound. So Why Can't You Let It Go?
You've reasoned with yourself. It's only chewing. It's only breathing. It's only a pen clicking across the room. And yet the moment the sound starts, your body floods with anger, panic, or disgust before you can think, and no amount of logic makes it stop.
Then comes the guilt, because the sound seems so small and everyone around you seems fine. You've worn headphones, left the room, and asked people to stop, only to feel like the problem is you.
If this sounds familiar, you're not broken, and you're not alone. Misophonia is a real, recognized condition, and therapy for misophonia can help you respond to trigger sounds in a whole new way.

What is Misophonia?
Misophonia is a decreased tolerance to specific sounds, and sometimes the sights connected to them, that sets off an intense emotional and physical reaction. It has little to do with volume. A trigger can be barely audible and still produce a wave of irritation, anxiety, disgust, or a fight-or-flight surge that feels impossible to control.
The reaction often centers on particular sounds, and frequently on the person making them. Triggers differ from one person to the next, though some of the most common include:
- Mouth and eating sounds like chewing, slurping, swallowing, or lip-smacking
- Breathing sounds like sniffing, nasal breathing, or throat-clearing
- Repetitive sounds like pen clicking, keyboard tapping, or a bouncing foot
- Environmental sounds like a ticking clock, a dripping faucet, or a barking dog

- A therapist who treats misophonia as a real condition, not a quirk or an overreaction
- Trauma-informed care that works with your nervous system and never forces you past what you can handle
- Practical skills to lower reactivity and slowly rebuild your tolerance
- EMDR integration when past experiences are fueling the response
- Support for the relationships and daily situations misophonia has strained
